Gene Leis was invisible guitar
teacher to hundreds of thousands. His signature book "Instruction
Chord Book for Guitar" sold more than 2 million copies.
Gene knows this because he was his own publisher, and he shipped
these books from his own address in Manhattan Beach, California.
Gene Leis opened a retail storefront on Pacific Coast Highway
in the late sixties, as an extention of his already bustling
mail order business. He had developed a guitar instruction method
using vinyl LPs and books which he would mail direct to music
stores and individuals worldwide. This store was the gathering
place for hundreds of aspiring and professional musicians, sort
of a McCabe's South.
A master of the Do-it-Yourself
ethic, Gene controlled every aspect of the production and delivery
of his materials. For instance, on his Nexus Theory book which
accompanied his many LPs and charts, published in 1961, the credits
inside the cover state:
RESEARCH, THEORY, ARTWORK, LAY-OUT,
COMPOSITION, PROCEDURE, ARRANGEMENTS, RECORDING ENGINEERING,
SOLO GUITAR, RHYTHM GUITAR AND BASS ACCOMPANIMENT, NARRATED,
EDITED, PRODUCED AND PUBLISHED By GENE LEIS.
