Cedella Marley Booker atop Mount Wilson, L.A., on Mother's
Day 1988
RAS ROJAH'S INTRO TO BOB MARLEY'S MOTHER
CEDELLA MARLEY BOOKER "Mother B" as she is universally known,
gave birth to Bob Marley on February 6, 1945, in the garden parish of St.
Ann, Jamaica. I've known her since 1981, the year her son left us. She is
magnanimous, openhearted, quick to laugh, yet at times stern, feisty and
almost Biblical in her wrath at those who would deny Bob Marley the fruits
of his labors. Her voice is huge and gospelly, and her influence on Bob's
career choice is readily apparent. She has a "Mother of the World"
reputation that is well earned. When I was with her at a Bob Marley celebration
in Wilmington, Delaware in the summer of 1995, the door to her hotel room
opened and 24 people walked in. Every single person was a blood relative
of hers, ranging in age from a two week old grandniece, to Mother B's older
sister! Her story is one of courage and determination and music. We're really
excited she has chosen the ReggaeSupersite to share some of herself with
the world.
