The Reggae Beat radio program began on October 7, 1979 on NPR affiliate, KCRW, in Santa Monica, California. The L.A. based show was hostcd by me (Roger Steffens) and my partner Hank Holmes. Hank put together one of the most remarkable collections of early Jamaican singles and albums that I had ever seen: I had a long broadcasting background. Between us we tried to cover all the bases: the greatest of the classic, unheard music from Jamaica's pioneering producers, combined with the best of the current releases from around the world, and - perhaps our most important feature - in-depth interviews with nearly every major performer in reggae music. Often these folks were kind enough to perform live in the studio, sometimes a capella, sometimes with just an acoustic guitar, occassionally with a full band. The Reggae Beat, therefore, represents a vital "oral history" of modern reggae, told in the words of its chief architects.

The early broadcasts are two hours in length, while the majority are full four-hour shows. They are presented here uncut, commercial-free, exactly as they were originally aired, with all the announcements of current events, interviews, and music intact. They are little time capsules that capture an era in all its vivid richness. Roger Steffens did most of the talking, filling each show with rich anecdotal material and to-the-point interviews. Almost half of each program featured pure uninterrupted music played by Hank Holmes from his peerless archives. Many more shows, other than those initially listed here, may become available in the future, featuring co-host Chuck Foster, who succeeded Roger as Hank Holmes' partner in the second half of the series.

Out of the 800 broadcasts, we have culled some of the most meaningful shows to share with you at a nominal cost. Each two hour show is contained on two tapes; the four hour shows come on three tapes. Each tape is a first-generation copy of the actual board master made in the studio on the day of each broadcast.

The post-paid price for the two hour programs is just $15. For the three-tape, four hour programs, the post-paid price is just $20.

BOB MARLEY AND THE WAILERS SPECIAL'REGGAE BEAT'BROADCASTS
WITH ROGER STEFFENS

Each year in May, near the anniversary of Bob Marley's passing, I hosted specials devoted to Bob
and his work. There is almost no repetition of material during these seven years, so that each is a unique document highlighting great live concert excerpts, rare interviews, outspoken co-hosts, and the latest discoveries among Wailers collectors. During February, KCRW usually held its annual fund-raisers, but occassionally I was able to program a special around the time of his birth as well. Each of these deeply-probing broadcasts is listed below.

RB83 - 17 May 81 - the Sunday following Bob's passing; a most emotional and raw tribute with rare singles and live cuts, two hours long

RB 120 - 7 Feb 82 - a birthday special, two hours long, featuring interviews with Rita Marley and rare music

[All of the following are four hour broadcasts]

RB 13 2 - 9 May 82 - a recreation of the events following Bob's passing, including major excerpts from his funeral, with dozens of songs from the Wailers and Bob's mother

RB184 - 8 May 83 - Tim Hauser of the Manhattan Transfer describes giving Bob his first network TV exposure in 1975; Bob's last U.S. interview, with Jay Strausser; Mutabaruka's in-studio tribute; Zimbabwe concert; dozens of songs

RB223 - 5 Feb 84 - another birthday special, with Levar Burton, including lots of dub versions of Bob's most famous songs; "60 Minutes - Australia" racist obit; Freddie McGregor's a capella "Redemption Song"; lots of live excerpts

RB237 - 13 May 84 - with Malike Lee Whitney, co-author of "Bob Marley, Reggae King of the World' as co-host; with Lee Perry, Linton Kwesi Johnson and Barbara Paige. Lots of demos, spirituals, and live material

RB277 - 17 Feb 85 - another birthday special, focusing on the assassination attempt on Bob Marley's life in 1976, with Jeff Walker, who filmed the "Smile Jamaica" concert two nights after Bob was shot, and Bob's biographer Stephen Davis, as co-hosts who recount the events leading up to the shooting, and its aftermath. A riveting four hours, studded with very rare, uncollected Marley singles and live concert excerpts

RB289 - 12 May 85 - Jeff Walker's unreleased Smile Jamaica documentary; filmmaker Jo Menell's stunning story of how Bob's music stopped a riot in Soweto; Hopi Indians report on Bob's effect on the reservations; Nina Simone's live tribute to Bob called "You Took My Teeth"; interview with Junior Braithwaite, the unknown original lead singer of the Wailers; U.N. Peace Medal presentation, and lots of rare music

RB 328 - 9 Feb 86 - Stephen Davis shares his final interview tape with Bob from Boston in September 1980; Ziggy Marley discusses Bob as a father; rare dub recordings and live concerts.

RB341 - 11 May 86 - Bob Marley and Jacob Miller interviewed on the island of St. Maarten; Wailers band jams with Higgs, Mowatt, Griffiths, Third World, etc.; Bob interviewed in Bahamas about death; Bob live in Santa Cruz, San Francisco and Nashville

RB393 - 10 May 87 - Tyrone Downie was the eloquent co-host of this final tribute, which includes the Wailers telling of their favorite tracks with Bob (Al, Fams, Seeco, Junior, Wire and Carly in what proved to be Carly's final interview before he was murdered); Bunny Wailer, Peter Tosh, Judy Mowatt, Jimmy Cliff sing "No Woman No Cry"; Bob rehearsals and live shows; Peter Tosh and Judy Mowatt duet on "One Love"; Tyrone serenades the Havasupai Indians with Bob's songs on the bottom of the Grand Canyon

ORDER DIRECT FROM ME: e-mail me at rasrojah@aol.com for pricing info and shipping, etc. These tapes are a great source of pride, and I'm happy to share.
